A scene is examined once. After it is released, it changes — and every question that occurs to anyone afterwards has to be answered from whatever record was made in that single opportunity.
That is the case for spatial documentation, and it is narrower and more practical than the technology usually suggests. A photograph records what an officer chose to point the camera at, at the moment they chose to. A spatial record captures the scene as a whole, which means questions nobody thought to ask on the day can still be asked in six months.

What photographs cannot preserve
Conventional scene photography is skilled, essential, and structurally limited in specific ways.
It records decisions, not the scene. Each frame reflects a judgement about what mattered. Anything not judged relevant at the time is not in the record — and relevance frequently becomes clear later, once a suspect, a timeline or an account exists.
Spatial relationships are inferred, not measured. Photographs establish that objects were present. Establishing exactly how far apart, at what angle, at what height requires either measurement at the time or reconstruction afterwards from images — and reconstruction is contestable.
Perspective distorts. Lens choice and position change apparent distance. This is well understood, and it is exactly the kind of thing that becomes an argument.
Sequence is not obvious. A set of photographs does not inherently record the order in which a scene was traversed, which matters for establishing what was disturbed and when.
What spatial capture adds
Measurement after the fact. Distances and dimensions can be derived from the record rather than requiring that someone measured the right thing on the day. This is the most practically valuable property, because it converts "we did not measure that" into an answerable question.
Relationships preserved. Where every item sat relative to every other, independent of which frames were taken.
A traversable record. Someone who was never present — a reviewing officer, an expert, a court — can move through the scene rather than assemble it mentally from images.
A basis for testing accounts. When a version of events is offered later, it can be examined against the recorded geometry: whether a sightline existed, whether a position was reachable, whether an account is consistent with the space.
That last one is where the forensic value concentrates, and it depends entirely on the record having been made before the scene was released.
What it does not do
Worth being precise, because this technology is frequently oversold.
It does not identify anything. It records geometry and appearance. What is significant remains a human judgement.
It does not replace physical collection. Material still has to be collected, preserved and analysed. A spatial record strengthens provenance for physical evidence; it does not substitute for it.
It does not fix contamination. Handling discipline is unaffected by how well a scene was recorded.
It does not remove the need for examination skill. A comprehensively recorded scene examined by someone who did not know what to look for is a comprehensive record of a missed opportunity.
The honest framing: spatial capture widens what can be revisited. It does not widen what can be understood.
Where it earns its place
Three situations where the argument is strongest:
Scenes that must be released quickly. A road, a public space, a business that cannot stay closed. The window is short, and everything not recorded is lost.
Complex or large scenes, where relationships between many items matter and photography alone would need an impractical number of frames to capture comprehensively.
Scenes likely to be contested, where accounts will conflict and geometry will be argued over.
Conversely, for a simple scene with an uncomplicated account, conventional photography and measurement remain proportionate. Capability applied indiscriminately consumes time, which is itself scarce at a scene.
The chain still decides admissibility
None of this changes the fundamental requirement. A spatial record is evidence about a scene and faces the same questions as any other record: when was it made, by whom, has it been altered, and can continuity be demonstrated.
The advantages it offers — automatic timestamping, capture at the point of examination rather than reconstruction afterwards — address contemporaneity and provenance, two of the four requirements set out in how forensic evidence survives to court. Continuity and integrity still depend on how the record is handled after capture.
A digital record with an unclear custody history is no stronger than a photograph with the same problem.
Truffaire's position
CIPHER is Truffaire's defence and forensics R&D initiative, and its status should be stated without ambiguity: it is research and development. There is no shipped product, no deployment, and nothing available for procurement.
We state this directly in this domain because overclaiming has consequences beyond marketing. A forensic capability described before it exists can influence procurement decisions and, downstream, casework.
The stated intent — multispectral field imaging, autonomous platform deployment, and in-field biometric identification, designed and engineered in India — is covered alongside the reasoning in why India imports its forensic equipment and the case for indigenous defence technology. Frequently asked questions
Does 3D documentation replace scene photography?
No. It supplements it. Photography remains better for close detail and for the specific images an examiner judges significant; spatial capture is better for context and measurement.
Is this admissible?
Admissibility depends on jurisdiction, on how the record was produced, and on whether continuity can be demonstrated — not on the technology itself. The requirements are the same as for any evidentiary record.
How long does capture take?
It varies with scene size and method. The relevant comparison is not against photography alone but against photography plus the manual measurement otherwise needed to answer the same questions.
Can a scene be documented after release?
It can be recorded, and its evidentiary value is substantially weaker, because establishing that anything found later existed at the relevant time becomes considerably harder.
Is CIPHER available?
No. It is an R&D initiative with no shipped product and no deployments. We would rather state that plainly than allow an inference to stand.
Where this leaves things
The useful reframing is that scene documentation is a one-attempt problem. Whatever is recorded during the examination is the entire basis for everything asked afterwards — and the questions that matter most are frequently the ones nobody had yet.
Capability that widens the record therefore has value out of proportion to its use on any single case. Most scenes never need it, and the ones that do could not have been identified in advance.
